Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2016 Victoria Bar Association Charity Softball Tournament & Chili Competition! UVic’s team came in 3rd place, hastily drinking their prize of a case of beer immediately. Also props to Khoa Tran for his awesome chili submission for the competition!

Dear incoming students,
Congratulations on joining UVic Law! Being accepted into law school is a huge accomplishment. My name is Sean Tamboline and I’m the President of the Law Students’ Society for the 2016-2017 school year. There is a whole faculty that is incredibly excited to welcome you to our community!
If you’re anything like I was, you are incredibly nervous to start school. I didn’t know anything about what to expect or what “law” actually was. Don’t worry. You’ll be okay. There’s a whole community, myself included, who are so excited to help you get through your first year.
Despite my initial hesitations, my time at UVic Law have been some of the best years of my life. You are going to meet more intelligent, interesting, and inspiring people than you ever have in your life. Victoria is also one of the most beautiful places in the world.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can message me or any other member of the LSS and we’ll be happy to chat with you! In addition, you may want to consider joining the “UVic Law 2019” Facebook group which will be a constant source of notifications, information, and laughs throughout the year.
I am so excited to meet each and every one of you! So congratulations again and see you in September!
UVic Law Student Society President
Hello wonderful UVic Law students,
It’s hard to believe but the end of the year is upon us. And that means it’s time to celebrate!
First, the LSS Awards will be given out at the final Dean’s Social on Thurs. March 31 from 12:30-1:30 in the lounge. There will be pizza!
More meaningfully, after three years in her position as Cultural Support Liaison with the Amicus Team, Karla Point has let us know that she will be retiring, at the end of April, to spend more time with her family and grandchildren. Karla holds her JD from UVicLaw and it was an extraordinary gift to our community that she took up the position of Cultural Support Liaison in September 2013. Since then she has played a significant role in the lives of all UVicLaw students, in Legal Process, at Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Camp, with the Kawaskhimon Moot, with open door office hours, at feasts, in work with the Amicus Team, at the graduation ceremony for Indigenous students, organizing sweat lodges, teaching cedar bark weaving, and so much more. Her caring, wise, gentle counsel, infectious laugh, and energy will be missed in the Fraser Building for years to come!
Please join ILSA and the LSS in honouring Karla, this Thursday at 1:30 in the student lounge after the LSS Awards.
All the best,
Some of you will already have heard this message, but for those who missed it or those who could use the support of this letter as we move towards our last round of exams, here is a little something special from the 2Ls.
TO THE 3L CLASS OF 2016 FROM THE 2L CLASS OF 2017:
This is a bear hug of a congratulation letter from all of us to all of you. To everyone of you who acted as a Law Buddy, or who played a part in the Amicus Peer Review Roadshow, or who brought home-made food and a smile to the 1L potluck; to all of you who understood and conveyed the beauty of help-not-hurt before we knew what it even meant; to all of you who have sat on a lunch time panel about what took to succeed at the OCIs or what takes to persevere after not succeeding during OCIs; or who spoke about clerking, or about the pursuit of articles, or the peculiarities of the government interview process; to all of you who have been our partners for group projects or teammates on intramural efforts, who have collaborated with us in law club activities or dance club activities, who have raised a glass to toast our success or been there to help drown our sorrows after moots or interviews or final exams; and to all who have served on the LSS, clubs and committees, who have offered up your advice, humour and perspectives, WE THANK YOU… We admire you and appreciate you. We will continue to watch your efforts, one year ahead of us on the career road, and no doubt we will continue to pester you for insight and the inside track on articles and employers. May you all enjoy the sweetest of success, however you choose to define it.
POSTED ON BEHALF OF TIM RICHARDS:
Greetings Law School Community,
On Monday, March 16 at 12:00 noon in Room 152 the UVic Faculty of Law will hold its annual Equity Meeting of Faculty Council.
This is an important meeting for everyone in our community, and we invite and encourage you to attend.
The purpose of the meeting is to further the equity and diversity work and practices of our School. Faculty Council committees (e.g. Admissions, Curriculum and Financial Aid) will report to Faculty Council and the community on the components of their work over the past year that engage with issues of equity and diversity. Please find attached the reports that the committees have submitted and please read these in advance and come with comments and questions.
We seek broad community participation in the meeting, and expect that a motion will pass that enables all present to speak at the meeting.
This meeting is an important opportunity for dialogue and accountability within our community, and we hope to see you there!
Chair, on behalf of the EDC
